Laperouse Museum
Just 10 minutes from the Grand Hôtel d'Orléans in Albi, the Musée Lapérouse invites you to immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the explorer Jean-François de Galaup, count of Lapérouse. This sailor, born in Albi in 1741, is famous for the scientific expedition he led around the world in 1785 at the request of Louis XVI, aboard the frigates La Boussole and L'Astrolabe. Unfortunately, his journey ended tragically in 1788 when his ships ran aground on the reefs of Vanikoro in the Pacific.
The museum, located in a picturesque setting near the Old Bridge and Botany Bay square, reveals the mysteries of Saint-Pierre’s expeditions through models, weapons, uniforms and navigation instruments. You can admire more than 600 pieces, including the remains recovered from the wrecks of La Boussole and L'Astrolabe. This must-see place tells a great page of the maritime history of the late eighteenth century and pays tribute to one of the most famous French navigators.
After your visit, why not extend the experience by enjoying regional cuisine at the restaurant Le Goulu, located a few steps away? This charming establishment in Albi offers typical dishes that will delight your taste buds and make you discover the flavors of the land.
Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply curious, the Musée Lapérouse is an essential stop to discover the maritime and scientific heritage of one of the great French explorers.
