The Tarn Tourist Railway

The Grand Hôtel d'Orleans is just 30 minutes from the magnificent Jardins des Martels in Giroussens, starting point of the tourist railway of the Tarn. This picturesque train, operated on a former departmental line rebuilt by passionate volunteers, promises you an unforgettable experience aboard old locotractors. Ideal for young and old, the trip offers an immersion in the charm of yesteryear.

From the Jardins des Martels, the train crosses the wood of the Garrigole and then glides peacefully in the plain of Salles, at the foot of the picturesque village of Giroussens. A stop in Lascaze, under the oak trees, will allow you to discover the history of this line through the captivating stories of the conductor. The walk takes about 45 minutes, including photo breaks and observation of the locotractor’s maneuvers.

The nearby Le Goulu restaurant is a great option for lunch before or after your tour. With local and tasty cuisine, Le Goulu offers a gourmet break in a friendly setting.

The railway museum, located in the centre of the village of Saint-Lieux-lès-Lavaur, houses an impressive collection of narrow gauge industrial rail equipment. Collected and restored since 1975 by the members of the association, this collection includes locomotives and wagons from European and American manufacturers, several of which are classified as Historic Monuments. The museum traces the fascinating history of the industrial railway, from mines to salt marshes through sugar factories and quarries, as well as the military railway of the war of 14-18.

For the more adventurous, a bike ride offers a fun and active way to discover the surroundings while cycling on the old railway tracks.

The Tarn tourist railway offers trips from 31 March to the end of October, with schedules and rates adapted to families and groups. Come and live a unique experience where history, nature and fun meet to create unforgettable memories.
